So, is it bedlam where you are today?
It was here. I presume it still is. I left the car at home and cycled/walked into work. Fell off once on the way in. Cars were at an impass and I confess to being more concerned about any erratic manouvers from the cars than what I was cycling on. Thankfully all traffic was stopped or at a crawl due to cars trying to manuvere past each other. So it was a low speed sideways fall with nothing injured but my pride.
I also did a very stupid thing on the way in. I cycled down the hill on the main road. It's approx 1/4 - 1/2 mile long and was just compacted snow. Thankfully there was no cars at that point and I didn't lose control but had a scarey few moments. I didn't dare touch the brakes either as I think I would have lost it totally then. I've uploaded my Garmin and apparently my max speed was 23mph (there was a bit on the graph that says 45.7mph but that must be a blip). How retarded was that. Having said that if I knew there would definitely be no cars about I'd do it again as I got a bit of a thrill out of it. Given the time of day I would have been better off and far more sensible to push it down at that point.
Rest of the journey uneventful. I had to push most of the cycle path as it was too deep to cycle in and when I stopped to take photos I couldn't get the traction to start moving again.
We were allowed to leave work early and I took it easy on the way home. Far less traffic at 2pm, in fact I only had one car that overtook me on the main road. I was ok on the main road hill as that had tyre tracks up till the next village to mine. Then the main road went back to being compacted snow so I went through the village instead. I then had to push most of the way home as I just couldn't pedal uphill in the snow. I was wondering why there was just a mass of cars along that road as there never is usually. The answer came to me a few minutes later. A van passed me got so far up the hill and then got stuck. He literally slid back down. Kudos to him he actually managed it very well. I presume he joined the mass of other abondoned cars further down the road.
