So, is it bedlam where you are today?
It was here. I presume it still is. I left the car at home and cycled/walked into work. Fell off once on the way in. Cars were at an impass and I confess to being more concerned about any erratic manouvers from the cars than what I was cycling on. Thankfully all traffic was stopped or at a crawl due to cars trying to manuvere past each other. So it was a low speed sideways fall with nothing injured but my pride.

I also did a very stupid thing on the way in. I cycled down the hill on the main road. It's approx 1/4 - 1/2 mile long and was just compacted snow. Thankfully there was no cars at that point and I didn't lose control but had a scarey few moments. I didn't dare touch the brakes either as I think I would have lost it totally then. I've uploaded my Garmin and apparently my max speed was 23mph (there was a bit on the graph that says 45.7mph but that must be a blip). How retarded was that. Having said that if I knew there would definitely be no cars about I'd do it again as I got a bit of a thrill out of it. Given the time of day I would have been better off and far more sensible to push it down at that point.

Rest of the journey uneventful. I had to push most of the cycle path as it was too deep to cycle in and when I stopped to take photos I couldn't get the traction to start moving again.

We were allowed to leave work early and I took it easy on the way home. Far less traffic at 2pm, in fact I only had one car that overtook me on the main road. I was ok on the main road hill as that had tyre tracks up till the next village to mine. Then the main road went back to being compacted snow so I went through the village instead. I then had to push most of the way home as I just couldn't pedal uphill in the snow. I was wondering why there was just a mass of cars along that road as there never is usually. The answer came to me a few minutes later. A van passed me got so far up the hill and then got stuck. He literally slid back down. Kudos to him he actually managed it very well. I presume he joined the mass of other abondoned cars further down the road.

Here are a couple of pics;

We only got a fairly small amount of snow, but it was enough to screw the traffic up. Enjoyed my commute home and took a longer route so I could ride on the fresh stuff (nothing better). I found I had plenty grip even on the compacted stuff, and the fresh stuff wasn't deep enough to cause any problems. Didn't have my studded tyres on, just 32 mm 'cross tyres, nice and soft.

A line of traffic was following me up this hill, the snow had been compacted and polished by earlier vehicles. I couldn't get the rear wheel to spin even if I put it in a low gear (I was trying). I could hear the following driver's engine revs pick up as he started spinning his wheels. There was no-one behind me at the top.

There is only one thing I dislike about snowy commutes: washing the bike down in the cold at the end of one.

Great pics Plax. That's not Bangor is it? Only ask as it looks a lot like my stagger home (Ffordd Siliwen) from The Boathouse or The Ship (Y LLong?)! in my student days. (Don't remember the little bridge so it's prob somewhere else).

Not a flake here. Again. (Just a dusting last night). And it's going to miss us tomorrow as well. Sigh... mutter..... grumble.....

Plax, your commute looks lovely. It's been a while since I've been over to Wales for some cycling or walking. Must plan something...

[sup]we had nothing here on the olympics till about noon then it went whiteout for 30 minutes .

roads didn't get cleared and i came off, landed on the knee thats getting based a lot lately, and clonked the wrist . ambulance on Blues and twos 30 secs behind me , how lucky !! they asked if i needed a ambulance but i was walking wounded only. was that horrible ice that doesn't look frozen but like a dry powder. will have a weekend off the bike and rest . got back on and rode the rest of the way home until i got to my road which looked like an ice rink. I walked to my house . [/sup]

not too much snow BUT... 100 yards from work and a spoke went in my rear wheel resulting in a pringle shaped wheel that was rubbing on the brakes. (its a real cheap wheel  )

so i disconnect the rear brake and take a steady wobble home.

there's just one short road that never really gets cleared of snow on my route but it does go down a bloody steep hill. i had the snow stud tyres on so i thought I'd risk it and took a steady roll down the hill holding the bike on the front brake.

but then i did sheet ice  . even the snow tyres wouldn't grip and just locked up. thankfully i was going so slow i just rolled over on the floor.

great ride, real fun

Nope, but not far off. It's Llyn Padarn in Llanberis.

Not a huge amount of snow here, but enough to ensure that down a dark canal I have plenty of fun on my last commuting week of 2010

Afraid I'm at an age where I dont bounce as well as I used to, so have only made 1 commute by bike this month. Complete white out here this morning. Guess it will be a while till I can get back on the bike again

I've gone from slicks to semi slicks. Now I've decided to put my knobblies on with much cursing. There isn't a lot of clearance now between my tyre and mudguards so I'm hoping that this isn't inviting a lot of jammed snow/ice.

I've not bothered to dig my car out and now the snow is starting to freeze. I walked to the corner shop earlier and it was like a death trap with all the compacted snow. I think it's all right once you get out of the village and onto the main roads (although apparently they actually shut the A55 yesterday for a time), but I've not ventured past the high street. I think it is far safer to cycle/walk to work that risk losing control of a tonne of metal.

Be extra careful out there tomorrow folks. I've got my hiking boots at the ready in case I need to walk it in parts. Apparantly it is -11 here. My partners brother lives in Reading and he says it is -15 there, dread to think what it is like for the poor Scots!
