What makes me laugh is how everyone counts the cost saved as just fuel. If you were to google a car expense site, you'd find out that your car costs you a hang of a lot more than that.

I commute 3 days a week on bike - will save about £1K a year in bus fairs etc..

I tot up the train fare I've saved - today I went through the £350 mark (I travel by bike every day I'm in the office but am only there 50% or so of the time).

What have I spent that £350 on?
New chainset, new bottom bracket (+ labour for servicing), new rear wheel, SPD pedals and shoes, new tyres (slicks and knobblies to replace the X-country tyres)....

2nd bike, 2nd computer, duplicate lights and (presta valve) pump........... (and more SPD pedals)

Inner tubes, bottle cages, chafe ease, savlon, plasters and dressings...

But, when I started commuting by bike a few years ago, it also made me start taking my own pieces in. The money I've saved from not using sandwich shops is pure HUGE!! and I guess some of the wear and tear could be blamed on my not-commuting cycling too.

Well I took up the cycling when I returned to work after a long child break. I reckon that I must save about £20 a week in bus fares, (I only work term time) so about £600. I have spent that on a new bike, food, clothes, lights etc.

So the bottom line is that I haven't saved anything. On the other hand I have a bike (rather than a well used bus seat if lucky), and a slimmer than before figure (how much do some folk spend on slimming products), feel healthy and smile lots - yeah I would pay £600 for that!!

Started cycling this year, so what with 2 bikes, accessories, spares and tools i think I've just about broken even (saving on zone 1-2 travelcards)

I reckon I save £50 (ish) a month in fuel plus not wearing and tearing the car. Although I did splash out on waterproof gear (£60) but I made that up over the summer already. Like a few people already mentiond I too seem to spend more on food when I cycle to work. Lunchtime starts at about 10am, finishes about 2pm!

Don't forget we are also saving the planet (allegedly)!
