Good write up, sounds a great trip and some nice pics too. islay n Jura are definately worth doing, if doing Barra try get down to Vatersay as well. The beaches on Harris imo are some of the nicest anywhere. If on the mainland its worth going from Ullapool and follow the road up to Durness and back down thru Altnaharra to Lairg.

Very good write up and pictures. Makes me excited for my planned tour to that part of the world next year with my brother!

Great blog and photos. I've toured a lot of those areas by motorbike but am yet to tackle my first bicycle tour. Living in Scotland, naturally some of the more remote parts of this country will be my destination when I do.

Out of interest, which cheap tent was it that let you down in the rain? Just so I know to watch out for it as I'll be looking for a cheapish lightweight tent for bicycle touring at some point (my Khyam works great on a motorbike but is too big and heavy to cycle with).

Pete.

Hi Pete, for the life of me I can't remember the make - it was a pop-up one not really suitable for touring - I only used it because I had it already and thought it was worth a try. There should be a few threads in the archives on good cheap tents, sorry I can't be more help!

Bloody well done Martin! Great blog.

I see you have an older Sardar (love mine) -I really think they are great bikes to tour on. Couple of years ago I did the Dales -got to say I found the cycleway very hilly. Yes, usually for camping equipment cheap isn't the way to go without sacrificing weight, quality, form or function. You live and learn!

Really nicely done.
