..given a the job for life (if he wants it) for his honesty !

A supermarket employee who alerted bosses when he was mistakenly paid more than £1m has been rewarded with a crate of beer.

Stephen Foster, who works at the Co-op's distribution centre in Birtley, Gateshead, was alerted to the error on his December payslip by his girlfriend.

He had been paid £1.4m, or £800,000 after deductions.

The Co-op said it received the money back within 12 hours and praised Mr Foster's "exemplary behaviour".

Coming as it does just before Christmas, it's the kind of act that renews your faith in human nature

Co-op spokesman
Mr Foster, of Gateshead, is unable to speak about the incident because of restrictions in his contract.

A spokesman for the firm said: "Due to an error in our wages department earlier this month, Stephen Foster, an employee at our Birtley regional distribution centre, received a monthly salary payment of £1.4m.

"After deductions, around £800,000 was paid into his bank account.

"This was somewhat higher than he would normally expect but thanks to his honesty and that of his girlfriend, who first spotted the error, he immediately informed us of the mistake and the money was back with us within 12 hours of it being paid to him.

"We were surprised and concerned about our mistake but not by Stephen's exemplary behaviour, which is typical of him.

Way back in 80's in my early working adulthood, one month my wages was paid twice. I kept it for about 2 months to see if they noticed, they didn't.. so sorry old workplace, it's probably one of the reasons why you don't exist any more.. I did feel a little guilty but hey, myself and wife number 1 had a bloody good time spending it..

Seen that where I work now, but it's when people leave and end up still getting paid for a few months after they've left. It surely must be quite simple to set the system up to stop payment when someone has left!!!

There must be a banker called Stephen Foster in Gateshead who received an unusually small salary....

A crate of beer does seem particularly miserly under the circumstances. A slap-up meal at the best restaurant in town[1] would seem the least they could have done.

A company I left did once throw me a very nice leaving do and waved me off before I realised they'd forgotten a couple of things. The company accountant was rather embarrassed when I wandered back in a few minutes later to ask whether they'd like the return of the company credit card and keys to the building. :-)

[1] Er, ok, this was Gateshead, so that's probably a KFC ...
