Just as long as the Clangers or Wombles don't get arrested. I'm sure Captain Pugwash and his crew are running for the hills.

You all seem to have forgotten that until about 20 years ago harrassment in the office was viewed as acceptable "hanky panky" and bottom pinching or a boob squeeze was an occupational hazard for many women (and the occasional man). I've no doubt that things sometimes went further than that if there was an alpha male in a position of influence over a woman's career or salary. Only recently my cycling pals and I witnessed a very young woman arriving at a remote car park in the Pennines, climbing out of a big executive saloon driven by a corpulent middle-aged man and blushing heavily to the accompaniment of cheers from my less, er, discreet fellow cyclists, getting into a scruffy little economy hatchback parked there and driving off. At about the same time I cycled past a driving school car parked in a side street and realised that the mddle aged instructor had his hand up the skirt of the young woman pupil beside him. It used to happen a lot and I'm certain that it still does. My guess is that the current crop of complaints is coming from women who have suffered harrassment in the past and now, encouraged by the prevailing mood of non-acceptance of that behaviour, have decided to give the old barstewards their come-uppance. How many of them will be prepared to stand up in court and have their day remains to be seen.

A good point Globalti. I started my working life in an office full of women. While I didn't appreciate the attention at the time (spotty inexperienced 18 year old) These day's I'd welcome it

Joking aside there is a difference between a slap on the bum, and what these people have been accused of. Even then child molestation wouldn't have been acceptable IMHO.

Just like the catholic churches problem, any previous complains that were made again these people would have been ignored or brushed under the carpet with a "No, not him, He's such a nice man".

These days access to the media is much easier, people can post their own news where previously an editor would have had the decision to put something in his paper. That's half the reason these things were covered up.

What frustrates me was that this comes to light after Jimmy Savile died. He cannot defend his position. Not to mention the people that "Ohh, we knew about that already". Those those people : If you knew at the time you should have done something about it. I hold you as responsible as the perpetrator. You inaction's caused more children to be molested.

All in the name of not rocking the boat.

Well don't forget that most of those men were held in awe by people who were a good deal more naive and trusting. Some of history's worst catastrophes have been caused by people trusting those in power. Nowadays we are better educated and have higher expectations of those in power and they in turn are far more scrutinised than they ever were.

It surprises me that you think so because I have not worked in offices like that and I started over 20 years ago. There were certainly flirtations and affairs but they were consensual between equals. A storage room for batteries was quite popular with one pair! Unsolicited 'Bottom pinching or a boob squeeze' was definitely not on. It's true that in the 80's a boss (not mine) was sacked after being reported for harrassment but it is also true that no-one condoned what he did. Also in the 80's a boss of mine was sacked after I reported him to personnel, as it was then. He was the alpha male you refer to and he did abuse his position. I reported him because he thought I, as his assistant manager, should put up with his making life a misery for certain female staff members. He tried to get me sacked for incompetence and I refused to accept his written warning. Then those abused by him spoke out. In all those years those are the only cases I experienced. Sheltered life?

What I find most concerning is that these people have been named publicly, long before any trial, so whatever we may all think of Max Clifford, and even if the accusation is found to have no substance his card has been marked and next time one of us want to get a story out in our celebrity life styles, we won't be going to Max.

(It should be remembered it was Max that arranged the mole with the MP expenses link to the Guardian, so he did do some good)
