It was the coldest day I've ridden on since I moved to Devon four years ago - but the roads were dry and there was no black ice around. Really enjoyed it once I got going, and none of my body parts got cold enough to drop off (I doubled my Buff over so my ears didn't get cold...).

It was the coldest commute I have had. It took a good 10 mins for the climate control to reach a nice toasty 25 degrees !

I will try ski gloves tomorrow! First ride since crashing just before xmas and writing off my best bike. My thumbs went numb first and then other fingertips. Both ways it was really painful when my hands heated up again. And I was wearing Altura Shield gloves which I generally found too warm last winter.

I was walking down the town centre last week at 3mph and the windchill on my hands was unbearable so I don't know how they did it.

It's not worth gambling with coming off for the sake of a few days. Looks like my 2009 commuting will now commence next week (if it gets above freezing).

I rode in yesterday at 04:45. The news said that it was -4 in Manchester but it didn't feel like it. There was no ice on the roads, the cycle ways were hard packed snow so I had no problems there. I did take it easy though.
The ride home at 17:30 was a lot colder . I checked the temp reading in the car and it said -1.5. My fingers did suffer a bit and I'm off to look for some ski gloves today.
My next ride in is due to be on lates (13:00 to 01:00) on monday. I might chicken out.

I wouldn't describe it as lovely but the roads are totally clear of ice; and there was plenty of cars on my route. Had 1 lemming of a ped (construction worker) who decided he had waited 10sec too long for a gap between cars of >0.5m to cross so he decided that'd he go for it in the 1m gap in front of me. Luckily for us I was towards a primary position and he was fast giving him a enough time to double back. Did he think his hard hat and dirty hi viz jacket would protect him and not think to use the pelican crossing circa 10m to his left

When i bought a couple of gore wind stopper tops i got a windchill calculator for free.

So when i set off yesterday at 4.50am it was -11 i usually go at about 16mph on the flat so according to the calculator temp would have felt like -25, now going down hill would bring it down to -34 all i can say is no bloody wonder i have chilblains.

So to most folks who biked in yesterday on average it would had felt around -17 ish, now you understand why folk think we are mad.

An interesting combination of rain lying over ice on some of the village roads in York-ish this morning. I get to find out about these while walking the dog, so I'm forewarned when I set off with the bike.

Main roads all salty again, though, so no problem there, except that lorries throw up a great cloud of salty brown water that I have to ride through...
