Mrs and I have got 50% of the panels done

The house we moved into back in April has solar panels fitted back in 2011. It still has a little over 10 years left on a very favourable Feed In Tariff. We get paid for each kW we generate, even if we use it ourselves, with a little on top for everything we export. As we’re out most of the time it is generating we’re buying back more expensive energy in the evening when solar drops of.

We’re in the process of adding batteries and heard today that our G99 got approved without any amendments. Install date is now in a couple of weeks.

Sounds great - we have batteries and they are great at helping you use electricity from the grid when it is cheapest

ATthe moment we have a "thing" with EDF where if we use less electric between 4 and 7 on weekdays then the next Sunday ALL our electric is free

so I just set the batteries to charge between 14:00 and 15:59 on week days and 22:00 and 23:59 on Sundays and it save us loads

does mean we have to spend Sunday washing, ironing and hoovering - but it means we have an excuse to not do it on other days!!

My current setup make changing suppliers challenging at best.

The property had a DTS system that was swapped out with a smart meter last year. I’m on a three rate tariff, day / night / controlled rates and have two MPANs. It’s the latter part that causes issues switching. Even my current provider can’t handle it properly and I’m on day 118 of an ongoing complaint that has been escalated to the energy ombudsman. It’s getting resolved very slowly but I hope to be in a better position at the end of it all.

The batteries will be a great help until in the meantime.

As far as I know my export tariff is separate to the "normal stuff"

so I could swap from EDF to ANO as normal
and then worry about the export later

actually we export very little most of the time we make ver little from thhe export - the batteries take most of the solar except for mid summer like now

Actually the bills used to be extremly confusing but they have sorted them out recently so I can see what they think I am doing more easily

How's this progressing @CXRAndy ?

He hasn't posted anything since May as far as I know. Been a fair bit of chatter on NCAP as he was a bit of a notorious poster on there and most people had him blocked. He seems to have just stopped posting both forums on the same day.

Hope he is okay but no idea what has happened.

If he has returned and I have missed it then disregard the above!

Will you renew some or all of the panels at the same time ?

The guy next door dropped a ton on a full system capable of powering his house. He could even sell power into the grid on sunny days and get it back at night on the cheaper off peak rate.

when they were clean

and it wasn’t cloudy

and it hadn’t snowed

we were pretty saddened for him when he found the payback period was roughly the lifespan of the panels.

bet he wished he’d asked that question up front.

Fritz - So pleased with the solar panels we had installed in early 2023. We’ve had monthly electricity bills for the last 6 months that have not gone over £30 and that includes all our usage and charging our EV. Before they start exporting excess electricity the system heats our water up too so gas bills have been zero too. Today, 28th October we have still had enough charge from the system to heat our water up and export - not bad for this time of year! Best investment of money ever and we’re hugely helping the environment. We reckon we’ll have cleared our initial pay out in less than five years. Fritz re cleaning them …. they really don’t need cleaning. 3 and a half years in and our window cleaner did them for £20 last week after a night of rain. He said they were good before the clean and I’d checked earlier in the summer myself. It’s always good to talk/ hear from those who have had something rather than those who haven’t - I can honestly recommend them to you Fritz and everyone out there especially with energy prices only going up! Do ask about an inverter for the hot water part which was only £500 if your system is compatabile.Best wishes.
