Shaun, you go past my house in Newfound on your way round.
The Big Wheel is on 18th July. It usually drops down to the south. This year it has 5, 25 and 50 mile runs. Nice event with about 300 - 500 odd cyclists. Enough for an event but not too many to clog the roads.
Although I try to cycle, I rarely go to Basingstoke (2 miles away) as it is so difficult.
Countryside all around is fantastic. Wide open fairly flat fields locally but then hills around and about if you want them in the south downs.
I do a nice loop down to Winchester on the back roads or out to Andover. You really overlook how pleasant it is until you go by bike.
If you go to Reading - ignore the cycle route, it winds all over the place and is about 30 miles long for a 19 mile journey.
