What area of China was that and what time of year was it with such clear haze free skies?

I rode from kashgar to Lanzhou from October 12th to 5th November, then 11th Nov - 9th Dec was Lanzhou - Chengdu - Kunming then onto Laos. It was such a varied country with awesome scenery.
