Helps greatly to see my fitness progress. Without stats and numbers riding would be a bit pointless to me. Of course I could still go out and enjoy a leisurely ride but the numbers bring meaning to it all.

How did you manage pre-bike tech?

Here's another thing it can do: make you seem a lot faster than you actually are!
Yes, even for a plane, Mach 45 is fast.

Rubbish. Not even a QOM.

thanks! .... I will definately check your suggestions. I have a Garmin Edge 500 that was part of the deal when I purchased my S-Works, but everytime that I have used it for longer rides to new areas, I get lost.
My cousin gave me his old Edge 500. I tried using it for navigation but it gave me no end of problems. The navigation line on the screen kept disappearing and it failed completely on longer rides. There are hundreds of people moaning online about similar problems. Some got improvements by reverting to older versions of firmware but that did not help me.

I gave up on its navigation function and now just use the device as a fancy bike computer. I have gone back to using use my ancient Garmin Etrex for navigation.

Out of interest, what info is on Strava that isn't displayed on Garmin Connect?
Sorry for not replying earlier. Been busy.

I don't think there is any more info displayed on Strava. They both use the same data - the data collected by your device. I like to compare my efforts with others, and there are more of them on Strava.

I fell out with my garmin 500 after I went off course, so I went back to where I knew was part of the course and it still said I was off course!! The arrow to get back on course was changing all the time too!

Am happy with my 810 and 1000 and have just put one up for sale. The 1000 re-plots a new course if you go off route quicker if following it to a destination.
Both connect to strava and garmin connect before I manage to get in the house.
I love strava to see my improvements, but it always gives me a slightly slower pace than my garmin tells me...

from what I understand, if you have your Garmin connected with a speed sensor, it is more accurate than Strava, because Strava tracks you via satelites in a straight line, and does not calculate the dips and rises on hills. I may be wrong though

That's what I like about it, not to be competitive but I do look at times if I have been down the same bit of road/track before, I also like to see what others ride it at & often wonder how they manage it LOL

Correct you can prove it by also using Strava on your phone & then compare the output.
