I've just fixed a friends bike and had to replace a crank because the existing one was split at the axle. the truly disgusting thing is that the crank is made from plastic. I hadn't seen this before and it is horrible. Not only does it look like utter crap with a sort of chrome plastic finish that is coming off to reveal the glory of the plastic beneath, but it also weighs an absolute tonne. It's about twice the weight of an alloy crank and heavier than a steel crank. I am a bit traumatised.
What really boils my beans about it is that at production it surely can't have cost more than a quid or two to put alloy cranks on the thing. Admitedly it is a budget bike but it's not complete rubbish. It's a Dawes with low end but not utter crap parts on it. Except of course for the cranks. Ew ew ew ew. I need a wash.
