I have been occasionally posting my progress as I prepare for the London 100 miles in August and have been averaging 60-70 miles a week on my old Carrera Subway urban thing which is tough but heavy. Today I picked up a Raleigh Airlite 300, 1 year old with light use for £255 (God bless ebay!). After discovering exactly how the gears worked (embarrassing I know, particularly as I had to ask a friendly bike shop - very red face!) and getting used to the direct steering I found it a revelation - so light, so fast just like day after night, wow, what have I been missing! It may not be the ultimate bike but it really is a brilliant upgrade for me. I rode it home from south west London to east London and took in a bit of my regular commute and I've gone from middle pace to being one of the quicker ones with no extra effort - probably less actually. Can't wait for a weekend ride to the country!
