My 4 year old niece was playing with one of her firends and they were asked what they wanted to be when they grew up.

The friend said she wanted to be a doctor or a hair dresser, quite a difference in pay between the two but good solid answers we thought.

My niece said 'when I grow up I want to be an elephant'.

Cue much laughter, I plan to remind of her of this for the rest of her life^_^.

My daughter wants to be a mermaid hairdresser. I can't get from her whether she means a hairdresser for mermaids, or she'll be a regular hairdresser that happens to be a mermaid.

ah, but you didn't specify it had to be a realistic wish. Maybe she'd like to be an elephant.
Now if you'd asked about career plans she might have had something more realistic: astronaut, or pop-star or whatever.

I recently asked a friends daughter what she'd like to be, she's around 12/13, she replied "A celebrity"
