Sometimes you just can't stop at the red light

Nah. Could have stopped - should have stopped. There's no justification for going through red lights , and I didn't see any in that video. As Mr P said, if you think that a vehicle is travelling too close you should slow down.

You've watched the video right? Are you seriously suggesting you would have tried to stop there?

Would stopping there be the actions of a good cyclist, or of an extreme risk-taker?

Are you seriously suggesting that the truck would have mown him down if he hadnt stopped? If you do believe that then why the **** arent you doing everthing in your power to get this psychopath off the road? Has anyone of you lot even tried to read his number plate? Has anyone reported this to the police? Or to his employer? im guessing no. Because having a bollocks discussion on an internet forum is a much more useful use of your time. road warrior bullshit. Read Cycle Craft again people please. Srsly.

Well, I'd rate the chance of the lorry not stopping as probably rather more than small, and that was borne out by the tailgating and the fact that the lorry also went through the lights. The problem is that is a one time chance, it's not a chance you'll get to try taking again. The consequences if the lorry doesn't stop will probably be fatal, and the combination of the two makes for a large risk.

You suggesting that you'd stop there puts you in the extreme risk taker category. Definitely not best practice advice there, Mickle.

Maybe you want to risk slamming the anchors on when a tipper truck is roughly 6m behind you and less than 1 second.
Personally, I like my life and won't take the risk of getting run over because he couldn't stop in time.

What the OP highlights is what appears to be a growing problem. Motor vehicles playing 'first to stop's a chicken' AFTER the light has gone red. It's so common in London as to barely warrant comment. Not just AL or less reputable skip/tip operators. I'm regularly seeing buses and taxis do it - junction of Parly Sq and Great George St produces particulalry egregious examples.

Amber means the same as red except that there are some limited defences or failure to stop. The police and Councils need to get out and enforce - this is far more dangerous than the typical cyclist kerbside or ped phase RLJ that gets the commentariat fulminating.

Having done this the other way around, all I have to add is that you'd be amazed at how quickly a truck can stop. I was on a bike behind one once when he anchored on, I got the stitches to show for it.
It's pretty simple.
It is quite simple, but the idea that, as a cyclist and therefore one of the vulnerable road users, I should control the actions of others in large trucks seems rather counter-intuitive. I would think it rather jolly if those driving large construction vehicles could control themselves. And then, of course, there are a significant minority of drivers who won't take kindly to being controlled by a cyclist. I know plan B (dive to the side) is the option at this point but it doesn't really make for a stress free cycling environment we can expect anyone to be able to use.

I use the words of wisdom from Cyclecraft (primary, secondary and all that stuff) when cycling on the roads to try to control others around me but it doesn't mean I am very happy about having to do it.
