Oh, come on, The Oyster Band vs. The Velvet Underground. The latter are revolutionary and debauched experimental cultural icons, the former are not exactly subtle folkrockers whose most distinguishing feature is probably a love of strong cider... it's no contest. B)

And Nico's flat, emotionless delivery is the point. June Tabor has a lovely voice. She is therefore totally inappropriate for the song.

Something tells me you haven't actually heard this particular cover! Hearing it sung by a beautiful voice but deliberately with no emotional hook or intonation, backed by an almost funereal drumbeat is something else for me. Just shows you how personal musical taste is.

Just been listening to Bill Nelson's Silvertone Fountains. Now for me, that is exquisite, but not everyone's cup of tea

With you there, FM. How could anybody ever come close to that frighteningly sinister German accent that Nico had???. I saw her in the mid-seventies. She started the show with a rather spooky rendition of Deutschland über alles. Impressive stuff

I'll confess my view of the VU has been coloured by my experience as a student in the mid 70s, when the couple of old hippies who lived in a flat above the house I shared forced us to listen to all their records. Their music hadn't acquired the untouchable status it now has and we weren't very complimentary. Mind you, I didn't fare much better for thinking the Clash were grossly over-rated a few years later.
