My lad has reached one of his first milestones in life. In the last month he has turned 16, started at college (training to be a plumber) got himself a part time job at a tyre fitters and got legal on the roads.

He's really enjoying college, telling us every night over dinner what he's been up to that day, from hanging radiators to soldering pipes.

He had his first day at work on Friday, off he went with a packed lunch. He rang me at lunchtime "Dad, it's really cool!" He was in bed asleep by 9.30 that night!

He asked if he could have a moped to get back and forth to college, the Mrs and I spoke about it and agreed it was a good idea. College is about 5 miles away and 2 bus journeys taking about an hour each way. Plus having a moped would give him more freedom and teach him road sense.

We ordered his provisional license a few weeks ago, booked his CBT and unknown to him ordered a new moped

He passed his test last week, I insured him (he still didn't know the moped was here) and yesterday I said "shall we go and look at helmets and gloves plus you'll need a lock"

While in the shop we told him his moped was here and he could ride it home. He was over the moon. He's been out on it all weekend getting some practice in

It only seems like yesterday I was winding him and he was falling asleep on my chest.

Thanks but no thanks. I think I'll pass.
These will be exciting times for him, and worrying times for you. I hope he succeeds in his training. Good luck.

That's how my wife feels at the moment (me as well a little) but he followed us home & I was reassured by his riding technique. Worrying about kids never goes away, just different thing to worry about!
Two of my stepsons have a motorbike now - I'll never forget the look on OH's face when the older one told him he was picking the bike up the next day, the colour drained completely! Nothing as stupid as a teenage boy as the saying goes, and ours are no exception!
They've both had one or two off's, but no injuries fortunately.
