In my opinion it is not sensible to sit in primary on the left hand lane of a 70mph dual carriageway which displays a 'No Stopping' sign, whether on a bicycle, on a horse, driving a horse and cart, or on a tractor...when the carriageway widths and the edge margins are wide enough up to the continuous white line to permit a safe pass within the inner lane markings, you are then a significant road hazard and cause an unreasonable obstruction liable to cause an accident but, as it is legal, then if people choose to that is up to them. There is a very good reason why bicycles are forbidden from motorways... if they weren't, some numbskull would insist on riding primary on them too.

In my opinion it is not sensible to be on a 70mph dual carriageway on a bicycle!

I use secondary or less depending on the road, or wherever I feel most happy, only using primary if needed, which is rare for me.

There's a guy who regularly cycles the A1 up here in Newcastle between Cramlington and Westerhope - pure unadulterated deathwish.

I wonder if he's a relative of the one I used to see on my daily Durham-Ponteland commute, cycling merrily alongside the A1 mayhem between Blaydon Bridge and the A696.

I could never turn my back on that kind of traffic.

I have one near me but it has a shared use path on one side of it. Every cyclist uses it.

I do however have to travel on the 40 mph stretch of this road, I tend to keep well to the left (not in the gutter but there is a grass bank with no obstructions). I constantly shoulder check because even though it is a 40 mph stretch, people dont seem to realise that and do 60 anyway. Here: http://maps.google.com/maps?q=rhudd...=MNWhlSPoqwE-sSEpacDeFg&cbp=11,331.24,,0,2.27

I have another two very small stretches of dual carraige way (about 0.2 miles in total). Here: http://maps.google.com/maps?q=rhudd...id=z4KG5tKcXngBUIWo89n1dA&cbp=11,1.52,,0,3.24

On all the dual carraige ways I travel on, I try to keep to the left as much as I feel safe to do so, until I come to a point where I need to take primary.
