South Bucks 27-28th Aug? (this weekend)

Hello!

New to the forum.

Based in South Bucks (Gerrards Cross), New (ish) to the area. Wondering if any one locals would be around this weekend for a ride. 30- 60miles would be a nice excuse to try out my new bike.

Anyone local (Wycombe, Amersham, Beaconsfield, .......) willing to show me the local back-country roads?

Cheers,

Tristan

Hello Tristan, I guess you have read the 'Oxford' thread in this section? CharlieB of this parish is an Amersham man, and regularly does a (Saturday mornings I think) ride around those parts. A nice man, and often has cake supplies. There are quite a few CC ers in that general direction so rides should crop up regularly. Obviously the Friday Night Rides are open to you should your fancy lead you to London - again, plenty of info on how to register within this section.
Also, there is a 'Ride for Food' scheduled for the Chilterns in, I think, November. Someone will be along (probably Ian) to tell you exactly!

Have fun, and welcome to the forum!

It's a bit more complicated than that...
Hello Tristan, I guess you have read the 'Oxford' thread in this section? CharlieB of this parish is an Amersham man,

I suspect Charlie might take umbrage at that suggestion - he is proudly a ("posh, historic") Chesham man. Which means that he can climb hills, as he's got no choice if he wants to go anywhere. Whereas I live at the top of the hill, and struggle.

There are some lovely villages to the north-west of Amersham and Chesham - the plateau opens up a bit and becomes a lot quieter. All the traffic is funnelled into the A413, which means that the back roads are quiet. There's also a pretty concerted programme to resurface a lot of the lanes, so they're pretty good quality. I wish I could say the same about the main roads that carry a lot of traffic.

If you're into hill-climbing, there are a lot of good routes up from Tring, Wendover and Princes Risborough. I'd specifically point you at Wendover Woods, because it's not obvious from the map. Turn right about a quarter of a mile into the road from Aston Clinton to Chesham and you've got a snaky climb on a one-way route with a 15mph speed limit, good views, and a cafe at the top.

Hi Tristan, :hello:
Normally I'd say a great big yes please, but unfortunately I've a very busy weekend centred around one of my other obsessions, and I'm unlikely to get out much.
That said, yes I do know some really nice routes from Chesham, and more in your manor, I used to live (and went to school) in CSP, and know some nice (flatter) routes from GX.
Please feel free to PM me!

p.s. no umbrage taken - those 's around the words 'posh, historic' are firmly ironic. ;)

Hi Tristan, I am new to the forum as well and relatively knew to road cycling. I live in Aylesbury and know some great routes around the country lanes over this way.

I am planning on a ride of about 40-45 miles on Saturday if you are interested in joining me. The route I am looking at is a large circular ride around Aylesbury, avoiding all main roads, apart from crossing them, hardly any traffic, which is always a bonus to me and the views are fantastic. Some hills, although I am a walker on some of them;-)

If you know Stoke Mandeville Hospital, there is a really convenient parking/meeting place just down the road in a very public area so your car would be fine there.

Would be great to have some company as normally me and my ipod when I am out training;-)

Yeah - I know, sorry sr, I meant posh historic Charlie in some snooty place out of town...but he's ok ;)
Already Natalie velojaune has joined in. What a lovely place CycleChat is!
Just don't get Charlie started on vinyl music... (In case you didn't know, Charlie is a DJ and wears a medallion when 'at work'.)

He does the night rides too - so there is no bar to the posh people - come along!

*(Sorry Charlie - poetic licence  )

While I think of it, I did do a really nice 72m route Chesham-Buckingham-Chesham (slight variation out and back) a few months back that I'd love to do again.
It was on mostly rural roads, apart from a stretch of the A4010 through Stoke M and the A41 for a little bit out of Aylesbury. One serious climb on the way back to get out of Wendover, that I walked.

That would probably come to about 48m from Aylesbury, but approaching the 95m mark from GX.

Do you have a route? I've thought about riding to Stowe gardens as a good destination.

Last time I headed out in that direction the road to Quainton had been blocked for building work. I picked my way through some gravel before discovering that the blockage was a real blockage. So I fought with the (horrible) traffic around Aylesbury Vale Parkway, before heading up on a lovely road towards Long Crendon - a road on a ridge overlooking the main Chiltern escarpment.

I live in Hemel but ride out that way sometimes, I have done this route: Hemel - Chesham - Gt.Miss - Hazlemere - Beaconsfield - Chalfont st Giles - Amersham - Chartridge - Wendover - Tring - Berkhamsted - Hemel. I would he happy to do this again in a week or 2 if you fancy it. I could meet you in Chesham and we could peel off from Tring on the way back up to Wiggington towards Amersham.

Hi Natalie.

I'm affraid I don't drive so would have to ride out/back to meet you in Aylebury. I would normally throw my bike on the train, to get to Aylesbury but services aren't running this weekend :-(

I'd be willing to meet you half way, does your ride go anywhere near G.Missenden, that would be an ideal meeting point?

Hi Tristan,

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. My plans for tomorrow have had to change for tomorrow now unfortunately:-( I hope you have a great ride and it would be great to catch up for another ride another time.

Great Missenden is not far at all so I can certainly meet there.

As you are new to the area treat it as a big adventure, you are never truly lost ;-)
