Last week, the right foot SPD - M515 - on my commuter started emitting a metallic click when it's under load; e.g., pulling away or when I'm in too high a gear for the situation. I didn't think it would be wear & tear, as I always unclip the left SPD at any stop. But then as the GLW smugly pointed out, :girldance: :notworthy: the right pedal gets more abuse as that's the one I pull away on. I've had this set for a fair few years, so time for a new set, or just swap them for a set from one of my other less used bikes - ?

Have you tried spraying the pedal where your shoe rests on it with something like gt 85 / wd 40 ? assuming its not a bearing issue sometimes i have found spd pedals can start clicking / creaking with the shoe and a squirt on the pedals or the cleat solves it.

As part of my weekly routine; tyre pump, drivetrain lube etc., I give the pedals a good shot of TF-2 in all the moving bits. Oddly, this week, no clicking - !

SPDs do wear with time especially in muddy conditions and they get loose and harder to release.

My right SPD pedal was creaking yesterday and irritating me on long climbs. There were 2 climbs which took me 30 minutes each, which is a lengthy period to put up with an annoying noise. I have found that a blast of GT85 every now and then does the trick.

I think the original mountain bike SPD system is a design classic. The pedals are almost bombproof and the recessed cleats last for many years.

They are an excellent system, I`ve just replaced a pair of mine which have just done 30K on my commuting bike, infact they were still usable just getting a bit tatty, and the cleats last forever, not like the road ones which are made of chocolate

Yes, they DO start to look tatty. I have migrated them down through my collection of bikes so the newest pedals are on the best bike and the oldest ones are on the cheapest bike.
