An alternative is to use pedals which are plain one side and SPD the other. You need to get used to flipping them over though

I'm not a fan of clipless, but this is probably a reasonable compromise.

I've got the PD22's on my bike and have never had any issues. Though I have only every used the flat side for testing the bike after maintenance for 5 minutes.
I got them for the reflectors to be honest.
Not the coolest thing going but during winter night commutes I though I'd better be totally legal.

I have recently bought a new Genesis Crois de Fer which arrived equipped the these pedal converters. Having only ridden the bike for about 250 miles, I am quite happy with the pedals and have no problem clipping in (or out). I did try to remove them by twisting them by hand but failed; I now know how to do it (http://techdocs.shimano.com/media/t...01/SI-PD22D-001-ENG_v1_m56577569830661952.pdf) and that I need to slacken the retention spring first so will give it another try when I get round to it. As they are no problem, I am in no particular rush to do so.
