It took me and every other member of my family (both of them) three falls each before we learned to unclip instinctively.

. Try setting the tension on the pedals as loose as possible until you get the hang of it.

Done that before I even tried them the first time :hello:. Sound advice. Nothing worse than making things harder than they need to be eh

Loosest possible tension(silly question, you are slackening and not tightening the adjustor screw aren't you) should be enough to have you unclipping fine 99.9999% of the time.

I'd double check that the cleats are tightly bolted into the baseplate and not sliding against the soles of the shoes slightly as you twist and try to disengage.

we've all had clipless moments, It the only time I got to make the 'bloody hell, somebody has nicked my sidecar' joke.

A day on the MTB without a clipless moment isn't a day on the MTB. My only road clipless moment was caused by someone elses sudden stop.

Stupidly, I fell off on friday at Barnetts but cruised round 2 loops of Davagh yesterday (I suspect neither of these will mean anything to 99.9% of the forum)

Checked both on Friday before my run on Saturday. Still had a wobbly moment and 2 falls, but persistence will get me there in the end and it'll become natural soon enough

I've heard of Davagh and been past it but never heard of Barnetts. Whereabouts is that?

You can get brand new Shimano M520 from Evans for £14.99 including cleats.

http://www.evanscycles.com/products/shimano/m520-spd-pedals-oe--ec050919

I got the same deal in Chain Reactions about 6 weeks ago but also got shimano inserts included which turn one side of each pedal into a normal pedal if you want to all for £14.99

Great deal. My original M520's are still going strong after more than 20 years off road use.

At that age, they won't be 520s, maybe 525s (released in 1993) or 747s. 520s came out, IIRC, mid-2000s.

Corking pedals, long may they make them (and, as previously said, I really like the M530s, for the extra platform.) Of my three bikes, two have 520s and one has 530s.

I tried clipless 3 years ago and within an hour fell and did the splits in the way you should not be able to do the splits (anatomically speaking). I leant the wrong way. I vowed I would never use clipless ever again. Truth is I just hadn't done any worthwhile preparation.

I went out and got decent fitting shoes (not the cheapest ones I could find), pedals with a wide platform so I could keep spinning if I couldn't get clipped in right away then fitted them to the bike on the turbo. Got them set up with a nice low tension so I could get unclipped easily. I practiced for hours up clipping and built up the muscle memory before I hit the road. Haven't had another clipless moment yet.

I also read a fab tip on here which has helped. Unclip well in advance of a potential hazard (traffic lights, dog on path etc) and slide out the saddle and put your weight on the opposite foot (the one you keep clipped in) at 6 o'clock. Has stopped me leaning to the wrong side when unclipping.

Go to halfords, ask for shimano sh 56 spd clips you will find them much easier to clip in and out. Why on earth more bike shops don't tell customers about these is beyond me? Last time I looked they were £8 trut me they do work!

thats what I did, piece of pee , I find spd on tarmac easy but on slippery roty trails I need the quick outs..as my feet dont work as quickly as I can shout siht!!

ebay too for sh56 cleats

My SPDs are magic.

They talk to traffic lights.

I roll up to red lights very slowly, hoping they will change.

However, they only ever change about 0.5 seconds after I unclip one foot. That would appear to be the signal the traffic light requires to change itself to green.

Not had a clipless moment yet after 2-3 years...

I'm looking to buy the M530 pedals and as this will be my first time with SPD's can anyone advise if the SH56 will fit. The M530 is not listed on the packaging of the SH56. Thanks in advance.
