Hybrid with drops on that gearing, why put drop handlebars on a bike with such low gearing, the only time it's ever going to achieve anything like a decent speed is going down a steep hill with a good tail wind.

48 x11 is a moderately high gear. Higher than my 46 x 12 which takes me up to the low 30's (downhill). Any faster and I've stopped pedalling by then.

I thought drops were good for alternate positions esp' on long touring days in the saddle.

don't get me wrong , it is a very nice looking bike but with that gearing it is going to be painfully slow at the side of a full blown road bike with road bike gearing. Yes the drops allow for more hand positions etc but to me they are advertising that bike as lightweight fast road bike with ability to climb hills easier due to the lower gearing, what they are not saying is the bike is going to be very slow on the road, I also think the price is ridiculously inflated when you could pick up a similarly geared hybrid for a fraction of that price.

What do you call road bike gearing??? And how often do you ride on the flat in your 50/11 or even 50/12.........

48/11 can power you along at around 30mph at a good strong cadence, which unless your a very strong ameteur or a neo pro is pretty good going

My chainset is 50/34 x 11/32 , i use 50 / 11 whenever I can on the flat, i am heading towards fifty nine years of age and very much an amateur cyclist I use the 50 / 11 to either ride at a steady pace at a lower cadence or if I feel like it I use a higher cadence for speed, 36 to 40+ mph is easily achievable in that gear.

48/11 gives you a gear of 114". Back in the day 13t was the smallest sprocket available and riders like Merckx and his peers used a combination of 52*13, giving a gear of around 105".

So I would hardly call the set up on that bike low geared.

fair enough guys, I just put forward my opinion on the bike, not trying to start a discussion of the wrongs and rights of the gearing.each to their own and all that but I could never justify spending that much money on that particular bike.

The older I get, the faster I used to be ...
Interesting that the 105GS rear mech is fitted with 36t on the cassette. An answer the often asked 'can I fit a lower gear' question?
