Selling you on a road bike with drops may be pointless, but have you tried a mix of them? Geometry can be very different from one to another. The ability to change position on the bike gets more and more useful the more miles you do, as does hunkering down against headwinds.
That doesn't really matter as I expect we are not the same age/gender/size/weight/level of fitness/same injuries
BUT I am quicker on my roadbikes than my Whyte Cambridge Assuming same route/traffic conditions/level of luck with traffic lights. Road bike average 14.5-15.5 average, hybrid sub 14 on Marathon plus tyres with rack and mudguards
