My winter commute bike quickly turned into my all year round commute bike and from then into my 'sunday best' bike.

Once you've gone fixed there's no going back - it's ruined me for other bikes

Yes I used fixed for my commuter when I was at work, now its my winter bike and runabout bike.

As Ian, in short yes. However, if your commute is going to be the majority of your riding (my commute is probably about 50-60% of my rides) then make sure you choose something that you enjoy.

This. Absolutely this. The commute can become a real chore if you resent the bike being used for it. For me it has to be a balance of nice to use against cost of replacement components, but when I'm comparing against a £2-3k per year season ticket on SouthWestFail trains I don't feel too guilty about spending money on my bikes.

Now have a worst weather fully mudguarded self build single speed, and something a bit nicer for any day that doesn't look like it's going to pour down.

Well here she is, the commute this morning was nice and easy. bang on 6 miles and traffic was light. Going home from the centre of Birmingham at around 1630 might not be so quiet though

That's pretty much my commute, not in Brum though.

6 miles door to door, but that's just boring, so i try and take a different route to and from on each of the different days of a set of shifts. My 6 miles turned in to 17.4 on monday - my excuse is that it is to avoid the traffic!

At my last job although it was secure I didn't trusts the local scrotes who I saw lots of times making attempts to get in. One was actually quite funny, one scrote actually managed to get into the next door bike shelter but couldn't get out! Anyway to cut a long story short there was no way I was leaving a good bike there and bought a cheap viking fixie (aka a BSO) for the job.
At the moment as my bike sits directly behind my desk when I cycle in I'm less fussy.
