Out for a walk yesterday evening I was trucking along the pavement beside the main road vaguely aware of a car approaching. There was a sudden clattering noise, followed by silence as a Renault Clio coasted past with a huge black cloud of smoke pouring from the exhaust. It drifted into a layby a couple of hundred yards further on where the four youngish occupants got out and after a bit of head scratching while the peered under the bonnet they proceeded to push it into a nearby estate. I would guess the timing belt or chain had let go and the engine was probably wrecked. First blow up I've seen for many a year.
I phoned 101 when I got home to report the trail of oil along the road (Lethal for anyone on two wheels) and today there was evidence of sand having been scattered along it. I've never fancied Renaults and this put me off even more, though it could happen on any car.
