All right . I hardly ever have problems with dog walkers even on stretches other people complain about.
If you slow down around dogs, there's always the chance that you'll get to make a bit of a fuss of them too

I believe the DfT guidance says that if you're going above 18mph you should not be on a cycle path. I've not ever really had problems with dog walkers at all. Like I said in the other post to linford, you start entering that mentality you'll be objecting to everybody else eventually.
I believe 18mph is related to the "design speed" of the facility: it's not a limit as such, it's advice that you may actually not be able to exceed that speed due to poor sightlines, sharp turns, etc etc.

If the DFT were to introduce a recommended speed for polite cycling on shared-use paths, I would hope it would be nearer 12 than 18 and I would like people to slow further while overtaking. If you want to do vehicular cycling, do it in places where vehicles generally are allowed: if you want to mix with the pedestrians, you play by pedestrian rules.

Obviously, that's what guidance means, I'm not labouring the point. If someone is cycling at 15-20mph on some shared use paths all the time as Crackle says, they really should be thinking about using some other facility. That's regardless of how good or bad it is. There is too much variation in shared use facilities, but the general idea the DfT have is the right one.

I know this forum does tend to give that impression here but there are several of you on here that have lovely dogs and talk about them from time to time to not think everybody is like that. If the path you use is a narrow canal path you know what to do :tongue:.

Unfortunately it's not. I did come across a bit grumpy about this, it's made me realize how much it's been cheesing me off, even to the point of counting how many cyclists are going too fast. Time to relax about it a bit I think, breathe a bit deeper, smile a bit more and actually speak to the regular offenders or alternatively to the copper who regularly cycles along there.

Just "clothes line" the scrotes, that will learn them. ;)
