So 7 miles in just over 24 mins, is that any good ?

Im wondering if I just need to work harder to improve although not so unhappy with my fitness. Not so great on hills though but im not trying to be the next Wiggins/Cavendish. Im also wondering whether to find ways to lighten my bike. Its a Kinesis T2 without mudguards and Mavic wheels although new bike fever is haunting me. However on my commute I am lugging a rucksack with a change of clothes, lunch etc and a seat pouch with tools, spare inner tube etc.

Thanks all

Your average speed is 17 mph, which seems fairly impressive.

It's an average of 17.5mph. It is what it is. Some go faster, some go slower. Lightening your bike might knock a fraction of a second off your times on a good day. Becoming more aero and/or improving your fitness will give you much bigger gains. I don't really see the point fo the question, to be honest. If you want to compare your average speed against other people, enter a 10m TT.

That's ok.

Like I said though, 17.5mph is neither good nor bad - it's just an average speed. Faster than some, slower than others.

It's pretty good for an amateur on a standard bike. On an outdoor road track on a still day, solo, you might be able to average 20 mph over a few laps.

Quicker than me. But it all depends. On a flattish ride I can average over 16mph. On a hilly one, less than 13mph. Never seem to make up on the downhill what I lose on the uphill - mainly 'cos descending fast on a road bike scares the crap out of me!

(I used to have a 9 mile commute which was pretty flat. managed 18mph once on a bike loaded with panniers.
