I was doing about the same commute distance and time. Went for my first club run the other week. With my added get there and back it was about 50 miles. As it was the social group average speed was just shy of 12/mph. This was purely riding time, not waiting for regroup at top of climbs, cake stop etc. Had no real trouble.
As you said if you don't do it you'll never know. BTW I loved it!!
