Funny how military hardware turns grown men into kids again...
So i'm at work talking to a guy, we looked up to see where a heavy thump thump noise was coming from...APACHE helicopter :surrender:....he flew across the edge of fields over the end of the site, maybe 200ft up.

We watched him go past....the other guy turned to me and said
'i just imagined him straffing the carpark, preferably hitting Richards car ^_^'

Funnily enough, i 'd been watching him, imagining something remarkably similar...

Oddly, I saw an Apache fly fairly low over York as I was working on Thursday afternoon, fairly unusual.

Don't forget the Hurricane, the plane that won the Battle of Britain. My uncle died in one in 1941. Having flown through the BoB he was doing test-pilot duties involving aerobatics and, flying inverted, the engine cut-out. Guess he was too low to do anything about it. He left a son who nevertheless joined the RAF to become a Phantom pilot during the cold war. He's still flying his own plane in his 70's:ohmy: He doesn't like driving.

Don't like the sound of a Chinook. Usually means that they are bringing another bad case from Afghanistan to Selly Oak Hospital.
It's a shame the noise for you means another wounded service man.We get them over our college in Cheshire and the noise just makes me and my mate look up,such a distinctive sound

I'm not used to seeing Chinooks, although I was able to recognise the 'THUMPTHUMPTHUMP' noise. The Sea Kings however, we get the ones from HMS Gannet flying over our house all the time as they go out to rescue people. Yet again, a great noise!

I didn't realise that, although I thought Selly Oak was in Birmingham?

It is, as is BrumJim...

Sea Kings and Chinooks aren't all that frequent over York - do see the occasional Chinnook high up and smaller army 'copters, going to the Fulford barracks. Although, a couple of years ago, I went out one afternoon for some groceries and as I walked to Sainsburys saw a Sea King go over quite low. Interesting, I thought, and carried on. Did my shopping, came out, there was the Sea King going in the opposite direction. Cool.

Found out on the news later, they'd had to winch a man from the top of the Minster tower, after he had a heart attack (there's a spiral staircase going up there, and a viewing platform). If I'd been in, instead of in Sainsburys, I'd have had a ringside seat for the whole thing, since my flat is about 500 yrds as the crow flies from the Minster, and I can see the tower from my windows.

So, if you're ever up the Minster tower, look north eastish, look for a white three storey building two streets away, and wave!

To return to proper Spitfires....
Was looking for a picture of a flight I witnessed over Derby some years ago - the first RR engined Airbus (A340 IIRC) in formation with a Spitfire.
Couldnt find one but thought this was fun:

Given the source of that I think it's more likely to be smart camera work with a long lens (and first class airmanship) than photoshop.
