I've been meaning to ask about this for a while, as I can't recall noticing one on other hydraulic disc'd bikes
(then again, I've not really looked for one)
Can't remember my Trek MTB having one - but that's a while ago

Is this just to extend the hose. or a means of adjusting to, maybe, change the lever characteristics?
I'd reckon extend, as it seems a bit silly otherwise (as there's not a rear one)

Looks like a Hydraulic union to me .

My Shimano hydraulic shifters (RS505) have the same arrangement. I always just assumed it was so the bars didn't need to be unwrapped/re-wrapped any time the hose needed detaching or replacing for any reason.

Am guessing space at the levers was a premium . Not seen many disc drop bar bikes .
There's plenty of them about, from every manufacturer/'badge-engineered' marque (ie; Ribble & Planet X)

Which I could perhaps understand, but the rear is a single line, with no 'coupling'
