By the way you can make your own waterproof clothing by painting canvas trousers and a canvas jacket with boiled linseed and them hanging it to dry for three days. When dry boiled linseed oil is very breathable and water resistant. You can buy boiled linseed oil from most DIY shops.

No linseed oil does not smell once it has dried. Sometimes boiled linseed oil smells before it has dried because it is mixed with solvents and catalysts to speed up the drying process because raw linseed oil on its own takes over a week to dry. Boiled linseed oil is what they used to use in commercial oil paints before alkyd polymors were used. So it is basically paint without any pigment in. You can also used 50 per cent boiled linseed oil and 50 per cent beewax. But you have to mix them together in a double boiler and then apply it hot to the fabric. Barbours' thornproof wax used on their jackets is 50 per cent raw linseed oil and 50 per cent beeswax. If you are adding beeswax you can use raw linseed oil instead as it will set hard once it has cooled.

If you watched Inside The Factory last night you will know that the Barbour wax is nowadays a mix of petroleum jelly, paraffin wax and paraffin.
