Was thinking about buying some fulcrum racing quattro's for my eddy merckx AMX 1 to replace my r500s, I've read about spoke tensioning, I was just wandering how essential it is as I am planning to buy them online... Can anyone give me some essentional info on spoke tensioning? Thanks.

How essential? I'd say extremely essential
The strength of a wheel is in the spokes being tensioned.... but not just tensioned, they need to have sufficient tension for the rim being used and also the tension needs to be uniform. Those are some of the attributes of a good wheel.

Just buy the wheels and don't worry about tensioning. If and when it needs tensioning, you'll know because the wheel will rub against the brake. It is generally not a user repair but something for an expert.
