Growing up in rural Somerset I can honestly say that things were bad with racism when I was growing up but got considerably better (my brother-in-law,, adopted brother and niece are all mixed race/West Indian). In the last five years it has become noticeably worse and whereas if I kept my mouth shut walking past a demo with this lot, I'd be alright, would a muslim or a sikh, a hindu? Would these idiots know the difference? Doubt it somehow. With another war on the go and a ridiculous wedding to further stir some patriotic fervour, there are some dark times ahead I think.

Racism and ignorance is not confined to white working class males. Twenty years ago I was in Chapeltown in Leeds with a white female friend and a Hindu male friend when we were accosted by some Afro-Caribbean youths armed with knives. They made a bee line for my Hindu friend and were going to do him over because he was a 'Paki'.

The ensuing conversation went like this:

Them: 'What are you doing here Paki?'
Me: 'He's not from Pakistan, he's from Egypt.'
Them: 'Is that in Pakistan?'
Me: 'Of course it isn't'
Them: 'That's all right then. Off you go'

Brilliant. Ray Cans I thought he was saying. Did he get the sunglasses he complained about a bit wrong?

But Mel Brooks has the right idea when he wanted us to laugh at the racists and this is a classic example of how to do it right.

my thought is that Adidas must be mortified. You can imagine them sending him free Reebok tops and asking if they can buy theirs back.

I saw a similar incident where they were simply pushing and fighting amongst themselves to show of an intimidate other train users. On e go tpushed on to th track, and was trying to get up. Several others fund it very funny, and two were trying to stamp on his hands as he did so.

Somehow that rates highly as a "Vote for us" message
