what sports drinks do you use and why, I have tried several types and I am not fully convinced they work. I just seem to be the same if I just use water ( and the obvious coffee stop).

I use High5 tablets with water. The tablets are light and easy to take with you, then you just have to put a tablet (or two) in your bidon, and fill up with water. I avoid pre-mixed sports drinks such as Gatorade and Powerade, because they're crap and full of sugar.

Same as me.
I never used to take any tabs or sports drinks. But after our Spanish mountain climbing tour, I thought due to the heat and the exertion it would be a good idea to add a High5 tab to my bottle. I've been using them since for long rides. I used to get cramps now and again, especially after a strenuous ride. They do really help curb my cramps.

High 5 taste of asparatine and leaves a nasty aftertaste in my mouth, hence just the plain water for me. I still have 2 canisters of High 5 (unused)

I found a recipe a while back on the internet that I bookmarked and that is supposed to be very good (if not better) than the electrolite drinks sold in stores:
  • 1/2 cup fresh orange juice
  • 1/4 cup fresh lemon juice
  • 2 cups of water (filtered or purified) or raw coconut water
  • 2 tbsp organic raw honey or organic maple syrup
  • 1/8 tsp rock salt or sea salt

Back in the 1970's there was "Accolade".... a greenish powder of salts and glucose you added to the water in your bottle.

Tasted terrible!

I've been advised to get something with Carbs and I usually by whatever is on offer, at the moment I'm using High 5 Citrus with caffeine. On a longer ride I also stick a tab of some sort (usually High 5 too) in my pocket and may put that in if I refill.

I've been known to just put squash and salt in my bottle and maybe sugar and don't really see much difference to other stuff.

I just use plain water and have done in all sports I have played/done. Jam sandwich and a hand full of dolly mixtures do for 50-60 mile rides ^_^
