Not sure if this has appeared on here...

I was reading about this yesterday:

http://www.findmespot.eu/en/

Its basically a GPS gizmo that is able to relay your position by satellite to email / SMS recipients so they know where you are and to let them know you haven't cycled/walked off a cliff or anything like that. There's also a 911 button which can be used for calling out the emergency services - it sends your co-ordinates to a call centre who work out what services to send based on your location.

Probably most useful if travelling alone or where there isn't any mobile reception, or if you just like gizmos....

My friend has one of these attached to his sixteen year old son (or rather his boat) as he sails around Britain singlehanded this summer. Set to the 'tracking' function, it sends a signal so his course can be followed by everyone via the internet on Google maps. Unfortunately the recorded route only stays in the web page for 24 hours, so at the moment there's not much to see as he's been fog bound in Amble for more than a day. But as a remote tracker it works as well as INMARSAT systems costing (and weighing) many times more.
