Just dloaded it on my phone to try it out. I'm on the free but IMO it's too restrictive, not allowing me to play individual tracks (however, I understand you can get around this by fooling the app into thinking your phone is a tablet).

My OH uses youtube to play music.

the ridiculous limitations Spotify imposed on Free customers
Well, they're not really ridiculous: you're getting what you pay for. Spotify has to pay the musicians, bandwidth costs, etc, even for free customers, and the ads have never come anywhere close to covering those costs. The only way Spotify covers costs is by selling paid subscriptions.
No, there's no console information on Spotify (running Yosemite and Spotify 11), apart from the standard stuff when the application opens or an exception is recorded.
I've just tried (identical setup to you) and it seems either the latest Spotify update or Yosemite has broken it. But some googling has solved the mystery: the app allows you to toggle on High-Quality (320kbps) when you have a Premium subscription, refusing to do so for a free or Unlimited one. However, once it's toggled on, it stays on when you downgrade.
