Hi,

A question for SRAM afficionados. My bike started off with SRAM Apex on it. At some point I replaced the cassette with a 1070 (ie Force/Rival). I now need to replace the chainset as the small front gear is worn (new chain is slipping on it). I saw a decent price on a Red 2012 chainset. I know that it needs the Yaw FD as well in that case, but would it be possible to stick with the Apex shifters for the time being?

Why would it need the new FD?
afaik the new yaw FD just means that you can use any gear combo with less chance of chain rub so as long as the shifters have the same cable pull which all sram shifters should have as standard i cant see why you would need to change the shifters as well?
Why not just buy the appropriator sized / bcd chain ring and change it for the old one.

Thanks for the useful reply - I hadn't realised that it was possible to buy the individual chainrings, I assumed they sold the whole chainset together. Yes, that would be the cheapest solution to the immediate issue. Re Yaw FD, SRAM are adamant on their website that the 2012 and on Red is not compatible with the earlier FD. Sounds like no matter what I do, it will be fine to stick with the current shifters, thanks.

I just changed the chainring on my commuter, less than £20 for a 50 tooth compact chain ring, of course i shopped around and did not buy a named brand but you get the idea .
