Hi everyone, I'm asking this question on behalf of a friend. He has a Giant Defy 1 and is unhappy with the gearing. He lives in Cumbria and is struggling to get up some hills. He is talking of fitting a SRAM climber kit but is unsure if this is possible? His bike has Shimano 105 with 50/34 compact chain set at present. Can the the two be mixed or are there other options? Cheers.

What are the cassette ratios? With a compact 50/34 front and 30 or even 32 on the back, he should be able to get up almost anything (he might have to buy a new rear mech though but they're not horrendously expensive)

As long as I breathe, I attack.
Dependent on the size of his rear derailleur he should be able to run a 30 tooth cassette without buying a new Groupset and maybe a new chain .

He can't use the SRAM kit unless he gets new shifters too. What he can do is fit a Shimano 105 medium cage deraileur which then allows a 11-32 cassette. He can probably put a 12-30 on with what he's got now.

Same job and not very expensive
