I have mixed feelings about celebrating today. The negative side was reinforced when a cyclist pulled up next to me as I was on my way home from a ride earlier today. He had a St George's flag stuck in his helmet and asked me if I'd been to watch the parade - "it was farking massive" he grunted. I may be reading too much into it, but I fear many English people confuse patriotism with xenophobia.

MrsR and I like to have the occasional night out in town (Nottingham). We're both in our 50's but are quite capable of dancing the night away and rolling in at 3.30am.

We were umming and ahhing about going out last night, but decided not to, with one of the reasons being that there were likely to be quite a few men of a certain type out "celebrating" St George's day.

Sad really.

Never mind. I'm sure there are plenty of other Saturdays where you can have a trouble free night out in Nottingham.

Generally not celebrated because we have nothing to prove. Our friends from the satellite states that live here
like to celebrate their own days because it lets everyone know they are here.I notice lots of Scots and Irish
take their days seriously but maybe the Welsh less so.As a point of interest where I live in Essex has a fair number
of Irish and Scots but strangely very very few Welsh.

I think English people are reluctant to celebrate Saint George's day because it could be seen as gloating - England is the dominant partner in the Union.

I agree to a certain degree with that. Also it seems any outburst of English patriotism is jumped upon as racist and just one step away from opening concentration camps!!!

I didn't even realise this year. Apparently St. George was originally from Syria. I hope we get it as a bank holiday in future. The last thing I remember doing to "celebrate" the day was marching with the scouts. I was a young scout at the time, before anyone calls me a weirdo.

I once had an interesting 'conversation' with a bloke in a pub about this. Here's what I recall:

ME; I don't bother celebrating today.

BLOKE: It's St George's Day.

ME: Why celebrate?

BLOKE: He's our Saint and he slew a dragon...

ME: You do realise that dragons are mythical (ie non existent) creatures...don't you?

In short, the dragon slaying bit never happened although I expect there are other reasons why this is an 'English' day. I see Corbyn wants to make it a bank holiday - bit too close to May 1 if you ask me which is probably more appropriate for Mr Corbyn.

Why is it that every time new BH are proposed, it's always on old military battle dates??. Or in this case, celebrating someone not slaying an imaginary creature. I would favour the summer solstice for a BH. Longest day of the year, hopefully sunny, a date that everyone can relate to which isn't some old battle that the nationalists/Tories etc keep bleating on about.
