Stand-off bracket for antenna mast

I'm about to put up a new antenna for our tv and have a stand-off bracket to fix the mast to the house wall. The instructions don't say whether to drill into the brick or the mortar between the bricks when fixing it - (wall plugs are provided). Anyone done this? Which is the best approach?

I've drilled holes for a satellite dish install and three of the anchor bolt holes are in the brick, and one is in mortar, it was unavoidable. The brick was harder to drill into, but there have been no problems with the installation.

Agree, mortar can be very soft, and if the mast presents a significant load (high winds - or heavy mast) it may easily pull out the anchor bolts and maybe the mortar with it.

Thanks all - brick it is then. I'd heard the wind loading can be surprisingly high even on standard tv antennae but wasn't sure whether this meant brick was the correct anchoring.

Generally I will drill in to the mortar to save damaging the bricks, the mortar can be repaired at a later date.
However, with anything high load, as mentioned, brick is better for the average DIYer.
