Anyone do it? I foolishly agreed to do 5 minutes a week on Saturday, beer may have been involved, and I am getting nervous already. Knowing jokes is not a problem, being a mouthy so-and-so is no problem, put the two together and eek!

Please tell me it's not at The Punch Grapes.

Bloody hell. Respect. I can't imagine anything more terrifying. Break a leg. The day before, perhaps, so you've a good excuse for not showing up. No, seriously though, hope it goes well. FWIW (not a lot) I think stand up is sort of about/like playing hard to get. It's a bit like flirtation: enthusiasm but no neediness....and above all, you have to give the impression that whatever they think, you're having a good time. Oh, and be funny. Adapt that joke in the disabled toilets thread...the Tourettes one. That should get you off to a cracking start. Good luck.

I've done a bit, I have no advice to give, because I'm not qualified to give it, other than just try amd enjoy it yourself, do it because YOU think it's fun.

Sometimes it goes well, and other times it doesn't and there is just no rhyme or reason why.

I once worked as "The Heckler" with a guy who did a routine in pubs.It got boring after a while because he never changed his jokes and our repartee lost its sparkle but it was a good way to have audience participation without the dangers of spontaneity.

I wouldn't normally comment on MB's threads, but have to say that in my entire life the number of ordinary people who could possibly make a go of comedy I have met could be counted on the fingers of one hand. While I've been helping her with the new house I've been in fits of laughter at times as she comes out with story after one liner after spoof song lyric. Will it come out as well on a stage? Perhaps. Maybe nerves will get to her but it's not as if she's totally new to standing in front of an audience, but singing or playing music seem a lot easier to me than judging on the fly the way to go with a certain audience. 5 minutes? Seems a long time to talk, perhaps if she fills in with a good song.

Went well. 5 minutes turned to 10 then a break for the band then another 10 minutes and she's still up there. A bit of sexism at the start, sunshine thought her brother, who went with her to give a bit of support, was the comedian. She's managed to keep it fairly clean (it's a wedding do with kids present) and off the army jokes thank goodness, think Dave Allen with long ginger hair and all her fingers.
