grown up since then and totally bemused that things that i enjoyed as a child provoke such adoration in adults…

Including Professor Stephen Hawking? Who liked it so much that he appeared in an episode, playing poker with Isaac Newton, Einstein and Data. Can't remember who won...

I only got into Star Trek Voyager when I found that the 7of9 character seemed to approach life in a similar way to me. Prefered Janeway for company though.

Blakes Seven is the best sci-fi series of all time and it's not even been mentioned. Servalan's magnificent nipples alone are worthy of giving it top spot.
