I like the first Star Wars film but I haven't seen any of the Star Trek films. Don't forget Solaris, I quite enjoyed the remake too. And Moon, that's good.

TV stuff, I used to like original Star Trek, Space 1999, Blake's 7 and agree with srw's comments on the humour, especially Hitch-Hikers and Red Dwarf, both very funny.

I got into Sci-Fi from Supercar, FireballXL5, Thunderbirds et al. Gerry & Silvia Anderson created some excellent TV. I've booked Fireball from Love Film. Love most story telling if the story is good. Hitchhikers I heard on the Radio whilst at college and still have the tapes I made then. Both the TV series and film missed out a lot of the pictures you get on the radio or in books.

Sci-fi is intrinsically very very silly indeed. The only good sci-fi is the stuff that doesn't take itself seriously - Hitch-hiker, Red Dwarf, Hyperdrive.

Sci-Fi certainly. SF (or sf) not. And if you don't know the difference, you aren't qualified to comment.

imho 2001, a space odyssey, event horizon and the first two alien films are far better that either of the star wars/trek franchises, not forgetting blade runner, which trumps pretty much everything…

Personally i think you are the only person EVER to put Event Horizon in the same sentence as 2001 and the first 2 alien films... I agree with you about everything but Event Horizon... by far one of the worst films ever

Well are they both abbreviations of Science Fiction but one is more pretentious than the other?

I wouldn't say the first Star Trek series was massively pretentious. It was optimistic and American-centric, but fairly liberal with it. What I most liked were the emergency meetings between Kirk, Spock, Scotty and probably McCoy (though I don't know what McCoy was doing there to be honest). The meeting were short and sharp with the minimum of technical jargon or bullshit. Kirk learnt as much as he needed to know to make a decision. He didn't pretend to understand everything.
