I think it was partly because of the input of Walter Murch who did a lot of the sonic and visual engineering work on the film, and all of whose pioneering ideas were promptly stolen appropriated by Lucas for Star Wars.
Marcia Lucas saved his bacon on Star Wars - turned it into something comprehensible.
I liked Harrison Ford's retort to G.Lucas on set: "You can type this s**t George, but you can't say it!"
Lucas had talent, but by accident or design he had a lot of other talent to lean on, close to hand.

Having just watched the last 3 (Episodes 1, 2 and 3) for the first time, I have to say they were utter and total tosh!!!! Even though Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope (or as most of us like to call it, Star Wars) is a bit dated, it is still an immeasurably better film than any of the ones with Ewan McGregor in.

Agree with that. I saw a part of IV on telly recently, but it was the version that had been updated with new SFX. The old SFX looked a little ropey, but the new SFX added absolutely nothing to it.

Apparantly the new films will all start with a robotic 'scrat trying and failing to get his paws on a cyber-acorn
