Don't get wet, that's the killer for me!

If dry, merino baselayer (good non itchy one), thermal jersey, Nightvision jacket if cold enough

Two pairs of legwear, longs - do not let knees get cold!

Two pairs of socks, adequate gloves, buff, ear band
That's pretty close to what I wear, except I've been known to wear two pairs of gloves too! And I have bamboo instead of merino as it makes me itch. And I wear legwarmers on my arms as I need to keep them warmer than my body.

Lots of layers, getting it right each day can be difficult when you set off. It also depends on the distance covered, now I commute a greater distance I don't need quite as much as I did when doing a shorter commute with lots more junctions in. You also need to start off cold, or you will be stopping to remove that first layer far too soon.

As long as I breathe, I attack.
Just got 4 base layers off fleabay , a bit on the large side for small but fine for commuting.
