Yeah, just reading this elsewhere, bit young. There's some good tunes in their back-catalogue, I think one of the things I liked about them was the studio technical excellence, a sonic obsession!
Walter Becker did some of the best production work in the business, and I see the album Gaucho as a great triumph over the personal and physical adversities in his life at the time. Even if they did borrow a Keith Jarrett tune for the lead-in to Gaucho, the title track.

I love Steely Dan, and the production is really, really good, but sometimes I think that the pure slickness gets in the way of expressing emotion.
