Had gastric flu for 2 weeks now..lost 14lbs in weight and had a rubbish Christmas. Question is will all the hard work I put in for months before Christmas, mileage wise on the bike, be now totally undone? In a way I am nervous about getting back in the saddle in case I end up struggling.

Just take it easy when you first start back. Were you training for an imminent event? Otherwise why does it matter, just go for shorter slower rides until you are fully recovered. It's harder in the winter anyhow

The weight loss might even prove a bonus on hills

GWS don't try to be a martyr

I'm going to be off for 8-12 weeks after shoulder surgery but it's far more important I recover properly this time

Struggling is just part of cycling. We all struggle at times whether 10 miles or a 100. Try not to worry about it. You will be surprised at how quick your body remembers that you cycle and gets back into the swing of things. Just ease yourself back into it. No need to push yourself too hard.

Your cycle fitness will not have suffered too much, muscle tone does not just vanish overnight so once you are back in good health I think you will be raring to go again. Add to that you will have less weight to pull up the hills so potentially you could be a little quicker.

You're fitness and all the hard work will not result in loss of all you're fitness in just 2 weeks. However, because of your illness, and weight loss and your bad Christmas, you will find it more difficult because of the problems you have had.

Take things easy, go slowly at first. You May be a bit weak because of the huge weight loss, and you may struggle to breathe because of the flu, so slow and easy Does it. Don't push to hard. Cycle to enjoy rather than to see how far and fast you can go until you feel confident. Good luck.

The hard work you've done has still been done. As other people have mentioned it's unlikely that you have lost any muscle tone and the psychological aspect of having done the training is still present. I'd just make sure you take it easy and don't try to over exert yourself too early on.

Thanks all for your kind words. The weight loss is a huge issue as it is a hell of alot in a short time. Time will tell....reckon another week at least before able to mount up.

Start eating more :smile: plenty of protein, fruit and veg as you can tolerate plus lots of water

Were you training for something specific? A competitive rider?

Training for dragon ride in June. I did it last year with 6 months intermittent training and struggled. So this time it is 12 months of planned training to get through the 230km alot less battered..lol

I've been sick for a week now (Bronchitis) .... I'm feeling better today but am still coughing. In the past week, I have ridden 2 commutes of 10km each but have taken it very slow. These were on the past 2 days ... I have a longer commute tomorow (50km return), but will also take it easy ..

I will be taking things easy till mid Jan (I normally cycle approx 300km per week)

2 good long fast rides over 2 days, once you are feeling well again ..... and you will be as good as new

Under normal circumstances, a couple weeks off the bike used to bother me...will I suffer etc etc...but no, I used to find I was straight back in, in fact I think you sometimes benefit, recover somewhat.
But as you've had gastric flu, I'd tread carefully and listen to your body. Ease into it, when it's right, you will know.

Don't make the mistake of trying to catch up on the missed training. Start slowly and take some time to get your program back on plan. It will take a few weeks to fully recover from illness, so listen to your body and don't be afraid to take some extra rest periods if required.

Dont rush to do too much Gastric Flu is a serious illness .Get firing on all cylinders before worrying about training.

In a way its lucky you are ill now and not in may.
