Next there will be a toll for cycling through. I cycled through the park twice this afternoon.

To put it into some context though, a local football club pay £60 every time they play a match so should the park run pay nothing? Maybe the football club should not be paying. Also I understand that part of the run is on the grass so that could be where the wear and tear comes in.

It costs nothing to repair grass, just give it a week or two and it's back to normal.

Seems reasonable to me. Some stupid woman was crying over it on the radio. The point is that it is an organised run, they aren't charging people who just want to go for a run.

Except the park.
So sportives and Audax's should be billed for the wear and tear on the roads? The Tasty Cheddar would have to pay out to Bristol City, Portishead, Clevedon, North Sedgmoor, Mendip and South Bristol councils!
Why not. And do they not interfere in other's use of the roads?

So where is the pitch?

I'm not even a runner... I hate running but it's almost tempting to turn up on Saturday in trainers and leggings and do a small jog in the park! Like @Archeress i have ridden through the park though not very often. I also wonder what South Glos think about it, as I presume they have targets for getting people moving! If the Parish Council wanted to raise some money then why not charge to park (though that would probably shift parking to other nearby roads).

Only an occasional park run runner and think its a brilliant organisation with a great following. Guy from council on the BBC news this morning was saying that they are prepared to give park run a grant to cover the cost, they just need to apply to the council but have thus far refused.
Always 2 sides to every story and I can almost see the councils point of view here, at the end if the day the council have duty of care for runners using their park ( it will be the council that gets sued if a runner falls down a hole in the park, as it's their facility that park run are using) likewise the footballers have to pay to use the pitches. If you were running a marathon or entering a sportive or audax you would be expected to contribute to the cost, as per any large group event. If you want to run for free you can do so on your own or in a group of less than 300 as per cycling.

I think you'd find that if a football team wanted to have regular matches in the park the council might well have something to say about it.

You've just made that up. Haven't you?

If a football team wanted to play regular matches with other teams in the park I'm pretty certain the council would want some control over where they played. Providing a pitch is a nice easy way to do that. Where's the difference between that and organised runs by a large number of people?

The paths are already there, and available to everyone.

Applying for a grant would be accepting there is a charge to pay. I would be surprised if the parish council are acting legally, tbh.

Problem is once they had gone down the route of getting a grant, they would be accepting the should pay, the next year the grant would probably be halved. Friend of mine is envolved in a group that have had their grant from S. glos halved and they struggle each year to make up the shortfall.
