It 'fell of the back of a lorry' - read about it here

I thought that it was a big item to steal but then I remembered the tale of the theft of Cleckheaton station - yes a full railway station!

Can anyone beat that?

The owner of the bridge said he would never get over it.

I think scrap steel is selling for about £250 a tonne.

I designed a floor which required a couple of threequarter tonne steel beams. The subcontractor had trouble getting the beams up to London, because his lorries were stuck in snow (this was just before last Christmas).

I suggested leaving the beams out in the yard overnight. I was politely told that this was a dumb idea - and the steel boys laboured until a quarter to midnight to get them behind a locked door. Apparently nobody will insure steel stock that's left outside.

I'm amazed at the apparent lack of deterrence that size and weight of such objects offer.

The stealing of Cleckheaton station though takes some beating.

In many towns even plain cast iron manhole covers are taken for scrap (Apollo bicycles, I believe). And for years people have been stealing pavement flags in from us in Yorkshire to adorn the patios of those soft bed-wetting Southerners.

Didn't a Henry Moore sculpture get nicked from round Portsmouth way a couple of years ago? Not sure what it was made of but it weren't something you could put in your pocket!

art critics! The lengths they'll go to!

Do you think the scrappers would be interested in these?
